Key selection criteria include: a high-profile initiative that makes a continuing difference in the community and enhances the WWC name. Recent Ruegg Grant recipients include Earthplace (re-mapping and posting of hiking trail system), ITN Coastal CT and Wakeman Town Farm.

Applicant proposals should include a written overview of the project concept, staffing, budget, other sources of funding, implementation/publicity plan, timing and ongoing benefits to the community and the WWC, along with proof of 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt status and a copy of the organization’s most recent annual report. Proposals, due March 1, should be addressed to: Westport Woman's Club Ruegg Grant Committee, 44 Imperial Ave., Westport, CT 06880.

The WWC established its Ruegg Grant in 1995 to honor former member Lea Ruegg with income generated by a generous bequest in her name. Following review of applications, the WWC Ruegg Grant Committee makes its annual decision in April, and reserves the right to withhold the grant if no applications meet the award criteria.

Formed in 1907, The Westport Woman’s Club is a non-profit social philanthropic organization dedicated to volunteerism and the raising of funds in support of the educational, charitable, cultural and public health services in Westport and surrounding towns. The WWC’s signature fundraisers are its year-round Curio Cottage thrift shop and annual Yankee Doodle Fair, held each June on the clubhouse grounds.

Other forms of WWC “here and near” philanthropy include local community service grants, need-based college scholarships for Staples HS seniors, food and holiday grocery gift certificates for Westport families in need (in partnership with Westport Human Services), annual Canal Park luncheon, subsidized rent for CT Braille, Bedford Hall usage grants for non-profits, and many hours of volunteer service.
