WESTPORT, Conn. -- The fifth annual Westport Mini Maker Faire -- showcasing invention, creativity and resourcefulness in a celebration of the maker mindset -- will be held Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Westport Library and on Jesup Green.

Produced by the Westport Library and Remarkable Steam, the event is free and open to the public.

Last year, 6,500 people attended this family-friendly faire; this year’s participation is expected to reach 10,000.

Makers are all ages and range from technology enthusiasts to crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, artists, science clubs, students, authors and commercial exhibitors.

To celebrate the event’s fifth anniversary, this year’s theme is “five.” Projects that incorporate the number five will be featured along with exhibiting makers.

“This year’s faire will be, by far, our largest. We have more makers than in any previous year, and we cannot wait to see what incredible stuff they’re bringing," said Alex Giannini, co-chair of the event.

Also on display will be a giant fiberglass dragon that is currently being constructed by local sculptor Chris Crowe along with community members at the Westport Library.

Many of last year’s exhibits will be returning this year, plus plenty of new offerings including modular art and paper engineering, fresh pasta-making demonstrations, mobile emergency medical technology, electronic dance production, sugar cane plates for school lunches (replacing Styrofoam) and plenty of STEAM projects and robotics.

At this year’s event, attendees are also invited to participate in the Library’s “Geek the Library” campaign, an initiative designed to bring more awareness of library programs and services.

Professional photographer Pam Einarsen will be taking photos of people with what they “geek,” or are passionate about, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the photo studio near the MakerSpace on the library’s main level. Participants should wear a solid black top and bring what they geek. Free digital and print photos will be available.
