WESTPORT, Conn., -- It's going to be a doggone good time in Westport as the Westport Weston Chamber of Commerce unleashes its newest event, the Westport Dog Festival.
It will be held at Winslow Park on Sunday, June 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival will be produced in association with TAILS the local charitable organization that promotes spay/neutering of animals.
“This is a new event for the town, a three ring circus of activities that will celebrate everything dog,“ said Matthew Mandell, executive director of the WWCC. “Dogs are a beloved creature around here and we’ve come up with a jammed packed day for the whole family, including people, so bring your dogs.”
The event will take advantage of the large field on Winslow Park, often called the dog park, with multiple informative and exciting demonstrations, goofy competitions, an obstacle course, vet seminars and more. Some of the demonstrations will be with police dogs, emergency rescue dogs, guide dogs, hunting dogs as well as agility and training exhibitions.
Competitions for prizes will be for best tail wager, best dressed, best kisser, best trick, best lap dog over 50 pounds and dog that most looks like its owner. Prizes will be awarded to the winners by a certified American Kennel Club judge. The obstacle course, sponsored by Garavel Auto Group, will be a timed competition where the winning dog will receive a year’s supply of dog food.
Surrounding the main activities will be over 35 pet-related vendors, rescue/adoption opportunities and other activities including vet seminars, picture taking, caricatures, dog licenses, lots of give-a-ways as well as an assortment of food trucks. WEBE 108 will broadcasting live from the event and will be offering prizes and free tickets on air the week prior to the festival.
The lead sponsor and presenter of the event is Choice Pet.
“We are thrilled to sponsor the First Annual Westport Dog Festival,” said William Dellipoali, Director of Merchandising and Purchasing. “As a company, Choice Pet exists “for the love of pets” and from the moment we opened our Westport location in 2012, it was apparent that this is a community of kindred spirits who truly value the special relationship to their animal companions. The array of activities at the festival is absolutely outstanding, and we know that this will be an unforgettable family event for dog lovers.”
Parking will be at the Westport Country Playhouse, adjacent to the park. The festival entrance fee is $10 per person and $25 for a family of 4. Dog owners can register for the competitions online or at the festival. All information about the festival can be found at www.westportwestonchamber.com/dogs. A rain date is set for Sunday, June 12.
