Westport Gets Ready To Mark Memorial Day With Annual Parade

WESTPORT, Conn. - With eight bands, local dignitaries and students from every part of Westport's community, the annual Memorial Day Parade is ready to march on Monday.

This year's parade starts at 9 a.m. at Saugatuck Elementary School, travels up Riverside Avenue, over the Post Road and finishes at Town Hall.

Memorial services will immediately follow the parade at the Town Common.

To see if the parade is canceled due to bad weather conditions, call the Parks & Recreation cancellation line at 203-341-5074 or visit online . Announcements will also be made on WICC-AM 600.

In the event the parade is canceled memorial services will be held in the Town Hall Auditorium at 10 a.m.

Robert Satter, a veteran of World War II, has been selected as the grand marshal this year.

Satter volunteered for active duty in World War II in November 1942. He was a radio operator with the 8th Squadron, part of the bomber group that was led by the actor Jimmy Stewart. The squadron was awarded a presidential unit citation.

After moving to Westport, Satter opened a portrait photography studio in Sherwood’s barn next to the Greens Farms Post Office, sharing the studio with another famed photographer, George Cardozo.

The Westport Veterans Council's theme for the float contest will be "Honoring the American Flag."

Certificates will be awarded for several categories, including best development of theme, best youth organizational float, most creative, best community organization, most colorful and the best overall float.
