Weston Guitarist Brings Band To Cobb's Mill Inn

WESTON, Conn. – If you stop by La Roue Elayne at the Cobb’s Mill Inn on Friday night you can see a a little bit of rock 'n' roll history.

Charlie Karp, a Weston resident, whose career dates back to 1970, will appear with Forever Young, his most recent band, which joins a list that charts the history of modern rock and blues.

Karp dropped out of Staples High at the age of 16 to join the Buddy Miles Express in 1970 and contributed an original song, “I Still Love You Anyway,” to Miles’ “Them Changes” album.

He recorded four albums with Miles and toured with his band, which backed up Jimi Hendrix in 1970 and 1971.

“Buddy brought Jimi to my house one night and we discussed performing,” Karp said.

He is indebted to Miles. “I was thrilled to play with him and it worked out well, he was in my corner,” he said.

Karp started original bands after leaving Miles, including the Dirty Angels Band and Slo Leak. He recorded three albums with each band, the latter featuring the guitarist Danny Kortchmar, who co-wrote songs with Karp.

Karp said he’s written hundreds of songs by himself and with partners that have been recorded by Joan Jett, Joe Perry from Aerosmith and others.

Forever Young features Rafe Klein on guitar and Laurie Davies on vocals. They will perform Dylan, Stones, Beatles and Fleetwood Mac covers and original Karp compositions.

Forever Young performed in June at La Roue Elayne and has performances lined up for October and November. “It’s the legendary Cobbs Mill Inn, which could be a music landmark,” Karp said.
