At around 3:30 a.m. Westport Police were dispatched to Chapel Hill Road on a report of a motor vehicle theft in progress. Officers saw a gray GMC Acadia speeding on West Parish Road, and attempted to stop it but it sped off onto the Post Road, police said. It was traveling east on the Post Road when it suddenly turned around and attempted to strike two police cars, according to police.

The officers avoided a collision, and the chase continued westbound on Post Road East before it was terminated because the speeds were high and the pursuit was dangerous, police said. Westport Police notified Norwalk Police that the car was traveling into Norwalk.

Norwalk officers spotted the Acadia on Westport Avenue and tried to stop it but it sped up and turned off the headlights, police said. The officer lost sight of it, but broadcast out a description, and moments later it was seen traveling northbound on the Route 7 connector.

Officers tried to catch up with it, but they lost sight of it near exit 3, police said. Police checked the Merritt Parkway and the rest of the Route 7 connector for the car. When they reached the end of the Route 7 connector, they found the car on its side along the shoulder of the road.

Police said two male juveniles outside the car and quickly placed them under arrest. Five more male juveniles got out of the car and were arrested. All of them were juveniles from the New Haven area and were taken to the hospital for evaluation, but none of them sustained injuries.

Three of them had active Take into Custody orders in New Haven, another had an active arrest warrant in New Haven and another had been reported missing out of New Haven.

The driver was charged with first-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny, interfering with police, reckless operation, engaging in pursuit and operating without a license. The rest were charged with first-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny and interfering. Westport Police will also be following up with charges for the juveniles.

Westport Police are taking this opportunity to again residents to lock their cars and take their keys inside.

"We have advised multiple times in the past about locking your vehicles, but unfortunately the message is not getting through," police said. "As you can see from the events of last night, it is not merely a property crime. Officers, civilians and the suspects themselves are all at risk of injury or death in events such as these. Please remember that the majority of vehicle break ins and thefts occur with unlocked vehicles. Please do your part and lock you vehicle."
