Motivated by their frustration with the lack of teacher voices being heard in debates about education, Lutz Fernandez, a Staples High School English teacher, and her sister, professor of anthropology and international studies at Brown University, traveled the country to meet a range of educators—from those in traditional public schools, charters and homes; those early in their careers and near retirement; and those in cities, towns and suburbs. What they learned about teaching and learning today provides critical insights into American education.
The book provides the views of working teachers on many key educational problems currently under debate and addresses many of the controversial solutions being tested including revamped teacher evaluations, curricular standardization and increased testing and data collection.
Books will be available for purchase and signing at the program, which is free and open to the public.
