The fundraiser at Saugatuck Sweets, a new business that sells ice cream, frozen yogurt, candy and desserts, will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday. The grill at the restaurant will also be open.
During the fundraiser, children can compete for prizes from the WASA “fish pond,” which will be staffed by WASA Junior Ambassadors. There will also be a silent auction, with bidding on items such as a baseball signed by Derek Jeter, Yankee tickets and a Saugatuck Sweets gift basket, which contains a gift certificate for one double-scooped ice cream cone per week for a year.
Dogs are welcome with their owners. The Saugatuck Sweets Special Doggie Sundaes will be served to dogs whose owners make a donation. The sundae is made of frozen yogurt, peanut butter topping and a milk bone on the side.
WASA is a nonprofit organization that was formed in 2008 to support the dogs at Westport Animal Control, the town’s pound and no-kill shelter. The group has implemented a spay and neuter program for impounded dogs and funds vet care for the animals.
WASA volunteers help walk the dogs each day, and checks references and visits the homes of people who wish to adopt a dog. The organization also funds in-home training sessions, conducted by Susie Valentine Collins, for new adopters and their dogs.
At-risk dogs from the animal control facilities and local residents are placed in foster homes by WASA. The group also helps Fairfield County residents who are struggling to pay for vet bills and pet supplies, including food.
