The League of Women Voters of Ridgefield, together with five area Leagues, will present Jeff Clements, author of “Corporations Are Not People,” as guest speaker at a special community presentation to be held on Wednesday, September 12 at Westport Town Hall at 7:00 p.m. The event, co-sponsored with the Leagues of Fairfield, Norwalk, Weston, Westport and Wilton, will focus on the controversial Supreme Court Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission ruling, and will be open to the public.
A Massachusetts attorney, Clements is President and Co-Founder of the non-partisan Free Speech for People, and is spearheading its national campaign to challenge the creation of Constitutional rights for corporations and overturn the Citizens United decision. In his presentation, he will discuss the history of corporate “personhood” in U.S. law, its impact on political campaign finance, and current national efforts to pass a Constitutional Amendment to overturn the Citizens United decision.
A brief Q & A will follow the presentation. Additionally, Barnes & Noble will have copies of his 2012 book available for purchase at the event. For more information about the September 12 presentation, contact (203)227-6114 or by e-mail at dskutch@yahoo.
