Birkerts is best known for his 1994 essay “The Gutenberg Elegies,” where he wrote about trying to resist the siren call of oncoming digital technology and how the advances could affect how we perceive literature and art.
"Internet Age" is a sort-of sequel, where Birkerts talks about the previous two decades of cultural change and the pieces of modern technology he's let into his life. He discusses how this technology has changed him and others.
“An unprecedented shift is underway,” he said, and “this transformation is dramatically accelerated and more psychologically formative than any previous technological innovation.”
Birkerts also talks about the importance of being engaged with the arts, where creativity is allowed to flourish.
