It was just before 1 a.m. Sunday that Patrol Officer Michael Demaio stopped a vehicle for speeding on Wyckoff Avenue and determined that the driver, 39-year-old Jovita V. Smith-Aramburo of Old Post Road had been drinking. So had her husband, Gilberto Chavez-Velazquez, 40, who was with her, Fox said.

“He was advised at the scene that he too was too intoxicated to take the vehicle,” the chief said.

After the car was towed, Fox said, Chavez-Valazquez went home, got another car and drove back to police headquarters.

He was charged with DWI.

Smith-Aramburo, meanwhile, was charged with driving while intoxicated, refusal to submit to a breath test, failure to exhibit a drivers license and reckless driving.

Both were picked up by a friend and have Municipal Court dates on the charges pending.
