How Well Do You Know Shellfish? Find Out In Greenwich Class

GREENWICH, Conn. -- The Greenwich Shellfish Commission will kick off the local recreational shellfishing season Sunday with the Fred Elser First Sunday Science program at the Bruce Museum Seaside Center in Greenwich Point Park.

Visitors of all ages are welcome to enjoy family-oriented activities throughout the afternoon and learn how and when to safely and legally harvest clams, oysters and mussels from local waters.

Greenwich Shellfish Commissioner Roger Bowgen will discuss a new weir project in nearby waters and the recent partnership between the town of Greenwich and the University of Connecticut to provide science-based information on the ecology and natural resources of Greenwich and Long Island Sound.

Visitors of all ages are welcome to enjoy family-oriented activities throughout the afternoon and learn how and when to safely and legally harvest clams, oysters and mussels from local waters.

The activities will include exploration of the marine touch tank, close-up looks at local mollusks, and demonstrations of shellfishing tools by members of the Greenwich Shellfish Commission.

Due to the tides, the program will be held indoors.

The First Sunday Science program, co-sponsored by Bruce Museum, is free and will be held in the Innis Arden Cottage at Greenwich Point Park, Old Greenwich.

The program will be from 1:30-4 p.m.
