WESTPORT, Conn. -- Julia Sweig, a senior research fellow at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, will take on the topic of Cuba when she is the guest speaker at the next meeting of the Y’s Women of Westport/Weston.

The meeting will begin at 10:45 a.m. Monday with coffee and conversation, followed by the program at 11:30 a.m. at the Saugatuck Congregational Church in Westport.

Sweig’s presentation will focus on her book, “Cuba: What Everyone Needs to Know.” Currently in its third edition, the book is a remarkably accessible portrait of the small island nation.

In the book's new foreword,  Sweig discusses developments since President Barack Obama and Raul Castro announced the normalization of U.S.-Cuba relations and restored formal diplomatic ties.

Currently a Nelson and David Rockefeller senior fellow and director of Latin American studies, Sweig served on the Council on Foreign Relations.

She holds a degree from Johns Hopkins University’s Paul Nitze School of Advanced International Studies and is an award-winning author of three books.

She also writes a blog for the Huffington Post, which carries her biweekly column in Folha de Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest circulation daily newspaper, and is an active public speaker who has appeared often on NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, BBC, "PBS NewsHour" and the "Colbert Report."

Founded in 1992, the Y’s Women serves active and involved working and retired women in Fairfield County, and has a membership of more than 400.
