This year, Beit Chaverim, Chabad, Temple Israel and The Conservative Synagogue of Westport, Weston and Wilton will join for a public Menorah lighting. The Menorah lighting will be held in downtown Westport at the corner of Main Street and Post Road, in front of the former YMCA building.
"On Hanukkah we celebrate survival and vibrancy against all odds,” said Rabbi Jeremy Wiederhorn of The Conservative Synagogue. “In a world struggling with divisiveness, we felt it was important for the entire Jewish community of Westport to join hands and light the Hanukkah candles together. As a unified community, we hope to bring a little more light to this world, just as the Hanukkah menorah burns brighter each night.”
The holiday, also called the Jewish Festival of Lights, commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 2nd century B.C. The holiday lasts for eight nights and days and begins on the 25th day of Kislev, according to the Hebrew calendar.
The event is held in cooperation with the Westport Downtown Merchants Association and the UJA/Federation of WWWN.
