Rocco Sarni, 57, was swerving on the roads and had nearly struck several oncoming vehicles just after 4:45 p.m. Sept. 14, Mansfield Township police said.

Sarni then hit a guardrail and left the scene before being located by officers a short time later, authorities said.

Sarni, of Washington Township, showed signs of heroin intoxication and was placed under arrest, authorities said.

He was charged with driving under the influence of heroin, driving with a suspended license, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, failure to maintain lanes, reckless driving, careless driving and being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance.

Sarni was later turned over to Bergen County Sheriff’s Department after the discovery of a no-bail warrant. He is scheduled to appear in court.
