WESTPORT, Conn. -- Award-winning journalist Ryan D’Agostino will discuss his book "The Rising: Murder, Heartbreak, and the Power of Human Resilience in an American Town" at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Westport Library's McManus Room.

"The Rising" tells the astonishing story of one man's recovery in the face of traumatic loss. It's about Dr. William Petit, who confronted his worst nightmare during the horrific 2007 invasion of his Cheshire home, in which his wife and two daughters were murdered and him brutally beaten.

Books will be available for purchase and signing at the free program.

D’Agostino, who grew up in nearby West Hartford, has been immersed in Petit’s story from the beginning, first writing about it as an editor for Esquire magazine. The only reporter Petit has spoken to at length, he draws on interviews born of that trust to bring to life Petit’s harrowing yet ultimately inspiring journey. “The Rising" lingers long after you have read it. It raises fundamental issues about the human condition and our ability to move on in the face of unspeakable tragedy.

Petit lost his wife and two children in a crime beyond imagination. In the hands of D’Agostino, "what emerges is a pitch-perfect story of grace, eloquence, and renewal,” said Buzz Bissinger, author of Friday Night Lights.

D'Agostino is the editor-in-chief of Popular Mechanics magazine. Previously, he was an articles editor at Esquire magazine, and he has written for The New Yorker, Ski and other publications.
