Michael Kirk Douglas, who owns a house in Westport, turns 72 on Sunday. The actor and producer was born Sept. 25, 1976 in New Brunswick, N.J. 

His first TV breakthrough role came with a 1969 CBS-TV "Playhouse" special, "The Experiment"—and it was the only time he was billed as "M.K. Douglas."

He started his film career in the late 1960s and early 1970s, appearing in little known films like "Hail, Hero!" And "Summertree."

His first significant role came in the telvision series The Streets of San Francisco from 1972 to 1976. His first big hit was "Romancing the Stone," which he produced and starred in 1984. His other performances include "The Game," "Wonder Boys," "Traffic" and Falling Down."

He was a featured speaker in a public service campaign sponsored by a United Nations conference in 2006 to focus attention on trade of illicit arms, especially of small arms and light weapons.

He has won four Golden Globes, including the Cecil B. DeMille Award, two Academy Awards—as producer of 1975's Best Picture, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and as Best Actor in 1987 for his role as Gordon Gekko in "Wall Street"—and an Emmy Award in 2013 for his portrayal of Liberace in the HBO film "Behind the Candelabra." He received the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2009.

He is on the Board of Selectors of the Jefferson Awards for Public Service.
