McClain, who has owned a home in Westport, turns 45 on Monday. The actress, singer, and author was born Oct. 13, 1969, in Burbank, Calif.

She began her professional acting career in a commercial for Band-Aid bandages in 1978 and later appeared in more than 30 commercials for products that included McDonald's, Amtrak and Kenner's "Strawberry Shortcake" dolls.

Her notable early TV credit was a recurring role on "St. Elsewhere." She is best known for two television roles on "All My Children" and on "As the World Turns."

She won her first Daytime Emmy in 1990 for "Outstanding Ingenue" on "All My Children" and second Daytime Emmy Award for her portrayal of Rosanna on "As the World Turns" in 2004.

She also works with various theater groups and wrote, produced and acted in a one-woman piece of performance art called "Mona 7.”

She later appeared in the independent films "Simple Justice," (1989), "Alma Mater" (2008), and "Soldier's Heart" (2008), which won the Best Narrative Feature award at the GI Film Festival in Washington, D.C.

She released two books of her poetry and art in 2008, "Conversations with the Invisible" and "Licked." In 2010, she released a live album of her music, "Club Passim." Her autobiography "Murdering My Youth" is due out later this year.
