Leibovitz turns 68 on Monday. The portrait photographer was born Oct. 2, 1949, in Waterbury.

She completed her studies in painting at the San Francisco Art Institute & started her career as staff photographer with Rolling Stone magazine. Her new style of lighting and use of bold colors and poses earned her a position with Vanity Fair magazine. She was received a Clio Award in 1987.

She was the second living portraitist and first woman to mount an exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in 1991.

A major retrospective of her work was held at the Brooklyn Museum from October 2006 to January 2007, based on her book, “Annie Leibovitz: A Photographer's Life, 1990–2005” which was expanded to include three of the official portraits of Queen Elizabeth II.

She was awarded The Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship in recognition of a sustained, significant contribution to the art of photography in 2009 and Prince of Asturias Award for Communication in 2013.
