Wilton Film Director's Bourbon Video Wins Industry Honor

WILTON, Conn. -- Wilton film director Alan Blake’s web spot has won a 2014 Videographer Award of Distinction.

Blake wrote the piece, entitled “History Lesson,” for Charleston, S.C.-based Virgil Kaine Bourbon. It was inspired by the brand’s back story, which tells of the eponymous Virgil Kaine, a Civil War railway worker and bootlegger.

Blake’s client had been marketing its product mostly via events and social media and didn’t have a large budget allocation for video production. Blake + Company’s solution was to shoot super-lean with minimal crew and equipment; Blake even designed and built his own camera dolly to run on the vintage rail tracks featured in the spot.

Electing to shoot the video with a Canon 280SX pocket camera Blake said, “I wanted a camera that was highly portable and suitable for the semi-documentary look I intended to give the film. However, I was keen to avoid some of the DSLR clichés that are creeping into so much work today and for the piece to have its own visual identity – I am delighted that the judges of the Videography Awards were impressed."

Blake, a 20-year resident of Wilton, also uses his talents on behalf of locally based businesses that he believes would benefit from using higher quality video communications on their websites and social media, as well as on local or national television ads.

He has pioneered a new type of production he calls WIMS, an acronym for Web Identity Movies. These are concise, creative videos which are designed to emotionally engage the viewer on behalf of corporations, brands or good causes.
