WESTPORT, Conn. -- An official ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday for Westport's new solar-powered electric vehicle charging station.

The station is set up at the offices of the Tri-Town Teachers Federal Credit Union at 61 Jesup Road.

The credit union and Karl Chevrolet of New Canaan teamed with the town of Westport and the state of Connecticut to establish the free station, which can charge two vehicles simultaneously.

“We were looking for a central location that would complement the EV stations that we have at the Westport Train Station,” said Westport Building Official Steve Smith, a member of the Westport Electric Car Club.

He recommended that the credit union consider hosting the station. The Westport Library, downtown shopping and many restaurants are within walking distance.

“We were intrigued by the idea of taking a building that was originally designed for horses and carriages for transportation and offering EV charging powered by the sun. This promotes a new way of energy-efficient travel that is eco-friendly” said John Coniglio, assistant manager and project manager for the credit union on this project, in a release.

The station is equipped with two chargers using standard 240 volt charging plugs. The pedestal also has two 110 volt plugs for vehicles that need it.  Power from the sun is expected to provide for up to 250 full electric vehicle charges each year. It is open 24 hours per day.

This is the fourth electric vehicle powering station in Westport.
