Westport Satisfies Sweet Tooth at FroyoWorld

WESTPORT, Conn. – Why settle for someone else’s idea of the perfect frozen treat when you can make one yourself? That’s exactly what Westport 10-year-old Ethan and other visitors to the newly opened FroyoWorld Frozen Yogurt Lounge in Westport did Thursday afternoon.

“This place is awesome,” Ethan said excitedly as he and his mom walked into the store, located at 361 Post Road W. The eatery, which opened last Saturday, features five self-serve yogurt stations, each equipped with two different flavors, a wall of dry toppings and a bar full of fresh toppings.

Because it’s a self-serve yogurt lounge, customers are 100 percent in control. That means patrons can serve up as much or as little frozen yogurt as they would like in one of two sizes of cups, sprinkled with their desired amount of toppings. When it comes time to checkout, each cup is weighed.

With no limits set, visitors can, if they want, fill their cups with every flavor of yogurt and as many toppings as they like, said Westport store owner Sharon Brockwell. In all, there are about 45 different toppings, including fresh fruit, cereals, candy pieces and sauces as well as the usual suspects, such as sprinkles.

“It’s nice to get exactly what you want,” said Brockwell, of Westport. “I’ve had customers get almost every flavor at once.”

In addition to the toppings, the store always offers 10 yogurt flavors, which include low-fat, nonfat, dairy-free and gluten-free options, Brockwell said.

FroyoWorld Chief Executive Officer William Bok, a native of Connecticut, said about 40 flavors total are offered. As such, visitors can expect to see new flavors every three to four weeks as the selections are rotated. Old favorites such as chocolate, vanilla and original tart, however, will constantly be available, he said.

For Ethan, a student at Kings Highway Elementary, the perfect combination consisted of Dutch chocolate frozen yogurt, gummy bears and chocolate chips.

“It tastes exactly like ice cream,” Ethan said as he scooped up a spoonful. “And I like the way the place looks. Other places don’t have all the toppings and stuff out for you to pick. We’re coming here from now on.”

Kids aren’t the only ones who approve. Mom Lauren, who treated her three sons Daniel, Eli and Jeremy, said she also likes the concept.

“There are so many choices,” she said. “I love the idea of the toppings bar, and the self-serve aspect is really appealing.”

FroyoWorld currently has seven locations throughout Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Puerto Rico. The Westport location is the third to open in the state. A grand opening celebration is set for June 30.

Store hours are 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
