The website placed the Greenwich-based restaurant at 25th in the 50 best tacos in the United States.
“I am very, very happy how big of a following we are getting because we have worked really, really hard every day from morning ‘till night,” Alexandra said in between handling calls at their restaurant.
Carlos is a native of Mexico, while Alexandra is a Stamford native but with a mother who is Puerto Rican and a father who is from Ecuador.
Carlos was equally as proud of the honor.
“I think it is great after pouring all my heart into this for years into my business and to make our life better. What else can I say,” he said.
The couple started off with the food truck in Stamford in 2006, and it has become a fixture on the west side of town near Jackie Robinson Park.
Three years ago, they moved into a small restaurant at 7 Apace Place in Riverside in a residential area off Sheephill Road. The restaurant not only enjoys a steady group of regulars who come for their Mexican food but it also supplies the food van in Stamford.
Alexandra said they have seen ups and downs in their business – including an older van that occasionally acts its age and doesn’t want to start. But they believe they are on the right track.
“I think with every cloud there is a silver lining,” she said.
Although they enjoyed the recognition, the couple didn’t take too much time to celebrate as they plunged back into work to feed their customers, including a very loyal Andrew Dos Santos who stopped in for a chicken taco with rice and beans.
He works nearby and visited about six weeks ago after hearing rave reviews of the place. He was hooked after that first visit.
“It’s the best place to eat around,” said Dos Santos, of Mahopac, N.Y.
Later, Dos Santos stopped his car and said there was one odd thing about the recognition.
"What I am most surprised about is that they are not No. 1," he said with a smile before driving away.
