WESTPORT, Conn. — In the age of e-mail and texting, some might think the elegance of handwritten words on well-designed stationery is a thing of the past.
Think again, says Shari Lebowitz, owner of Bespoke Designs, a couture invitation, stationery and celebrations studio that just opened its doors at 5A Sconset Square.
“In this digital age there is nothing as warm and personal as a handwritten note on an exquisite piece of brightly colored, beautifully textured stationery,” said Lebowitz. “It takes an ordinary gesture and makes it a celebratory one. How wonderful it is to reach into your mailbox to find that gorgeous, handwritten envelope.”
On Monday, April 10, Lebowitz will welcome a special guest to prove her point. Nancy Sharon Collins, author of “The Complete Engraver, Monograms, Crests, Ciphers, Seals and The Etiquette of Social Stationery,” will be at the shop to sign copies of her book and introduce her Lagniappe line of stationery.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place from 1 to 4 p.m.
Bespoke Designs offers custom products, including luxury stationery, invitations, monograms, tableware and a full range of wedding and milestones merchandise.
Designs are brought to life through traditional engraving, letterpress, foil stamped, thermography and contemporary digital printing techniques on fine papers, linens and china.
Lebowitz believes the timing for Bespoke’s arrival couldn’t be more ideal. The shop fills a void created when Printemps closed its doors on Avery Place more than five years ago. More recently, Milestones closed in New Canaan.
“All entertaining begins with a great invitation. Whether you are planning a wedding or a spring party, we are here ready to welcome you with our highly curated collections,” she said. “I am so excited to be a part of such a wonderful community.”
A graduate of the Parsons School, Lebowitz enjoyed creating sophisticated, comfortable interiors for homes nationwide. Her work has been published in Traditional Home, Westchester Cottages & Gardens, Connecticut Cottages & Gardens, East Coast Home & Design, New York House and the New York Times Magazine.
Having relocated to Westport nearly two years ago and recently remarried, she saw the need for an upscale paperie and celebrations destination.
Lebowitz welcomes customers during store hours Monday – Saturday (appointments are available too!). For more information, visit www.bespokedesigns.com .
