Herbert will take the helm as President Paul Timpanelli retires Oct. 31 after 28 years of service to the regional organization.
“I believe that the skills that Mickey will bring to the table will lay the groundwork, in partnership with our volunteer leadership, to redefine and update the role of the BRBC in a manner which will enable our resources to be more effectively dedicated to building a renewed business environment,” BRBC Board Chair Armando Conclaves said in announcing the appointment Tuesday.
Herbert, a longtime member and former chairman of the BRBC Board of Directors, brings to the presidency a wealth of corporate leadership and statewide business experience, having served as CEO for three different heath care member organizations over the last 30 years.
From 2005 to 2010, Herbert was president and CEO of ConnectiCare, a $1 billion health plan in Connecticut and western Massachusetts, and executive vice president of its parent company, EmblemHealth, a $10 billion company in New York City. While he was ConnectiCare’s CEO, the company was ranked the No. 1 for-profit healthcare plan in America.
Before joining ConnectiCare, he was founder and CEO for 22 years of Physicians Health Services, a health plan serving Connecticut, New York and New Jersey.
In addition, Herbert has much experience in economic development in the region and state. He was most recently co-chair of Bridgeport Mayor Joe Ganim’s Economic Development Transition Committee and was economic development chairman of the MetroHartford Alliance Board of Directors.
He was a founder and, for eight years, served as CEO and majority owner of the Bridgeport Bluefish, an independent minor league baseball team.
For the past eight years, he has served as director of the University of Connecticut Foundation, and is currently on that organization’s executive committee and serves as its human resources committee chair.
A Fairfield resident, Herbert holds a bachelor’s degree from Swarthmore College and an MBA from Harvard University.
The BRBC represents 800 member businesses and organizations in the greater Bridgeport region. It includes six affiliates: the Bridgeport, Trumbull and Stratford chambers of commerce, the Bridgeport Economic Development Corporation, Leadership Greater Bridgeport and the Women’s Leadership Council.
