WESTPORT, Conn. — If there’s one thing Westport mom-of-two Taryn Bolotin knows well, it’s that children outgrow clothing much too fast. That’s why she opened Around the Rosy, a children’s resale boutique where parents can shop for and sell clothes.
Around the Rosy, which opened Monday at 222 Post Road W., buys and resells new and gently used clothing for newborns and children up to age 14, toys, shoes, furniture and gear, said Bolotin, daughter of singer Michael Bolton (who was born Michael Bolotin).
“I have two girls and found we were creating a lot of waste,” said Bolotin, a Westport native and 1997 Staples High School graduate. “People would give us stuff for the girls and we buy things ourselves, and there were clothes they never even wore or wore once before they outgrew them, and toys they never played with.”
As a result, unused clothes and toys began to accumulate at her house. One day, Bolotin’s sister told her about an out-of-town consignment shop where she could buy and sell children’s items. With no options in town, she decided to check it out.
“I thought it was so great that I could bring stuff with me to sell, and then buy in the next size up,” she said. “The only downside was that the shop was an hour away.”
After two years of making the trek to the consignment shop — and encouragement from her husband — Bolotin decided it was time to open a children’s resale shop in her hometown.
"I like the idea of not creating more waste," said Bolotin. "It’s good for the environment and good for your wallet."
Although Around the Rosy buys and resells a wide variety of new and gently used items, used car seats and cribs are not accepted due to safety regulations, Bolotin said.
Anyone interested in selling used items can bring the items to the shop, preferably in a bin, where they will be inspected. In order for used items to be accepted, they must be laundered, free of stains and should not show signs of heavy wear.
Bolotin said she also makes house calls when customers are interested in selling bulky items like furniture or have a large quantity of items to sell.
