WESTPORT, Conn. — A line of hungry lunchtime customers snaked along one wall as Jersey Mike’s officially opened its doors for business Wednesday at Compo Acres Shopping Center in Westport.

“We’ve been looking at real estate all over Connecticut,” said Brian O’Hagan, one of three managing partners of the company. “We always wanted to be here in Westport, where there are a lot of people, especially in this area.”

In addition to the ribbon-cutting at the 390 Post Road E. location, the new eatery gave out 10,000 coupons throughout the community offering a free regular sub for a minimum $1 donation to Special Olympics Connecticut, said Amy Otworth, marketing representative for Jersey Mike’s.

The promotion runs through Sunday and customers must have a coupon to be eligible.

Representatives from Special Olympics were on hand, giving out takeout menus and participating in the ribbon cutting. The restaurant hopes to raise about $5,500 for Special Olympics, O’Hagan said.

“This is awesome,” said Raymond Hadden, a 31-year Special Olympics athlete from New Milford, who is also on the organization’s board of directors. “That’s my way of paying back for everything Special Olympics has given me. This is great what they’re doing here.”

Hadden’s dad, Bill Rice, pronounced his hot Big Kahuna sandwich “very good” and praised Jersey Mike’s for giving back to the community from its first day.

“It’s great to do this promotion here for Special Olympics,” he said.

His wife Terry agreed. “It’s such a great organization. They do wonderful things.”

Westport First Selectman Jim Marpe was on hand for the ribbon cutting. “I’m happy to welcome them to the community and I appreciate their participation in this fundraiser.

“Now I’m going to go have some lunch,” he said, walking inside the crowded restaurant.

Jersey Mike’s, which is based in Point Pleasant, N.J., offers a full menu of cold and hot subs, from the American Classic of ham and provolone to Chipotle Cheese Steak with grilled onions, peppers and chipotle mayo. Wraps include Buffalo Chicken, Grilled Veggie and Turkey Wrap.

The Westport location will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.
