WESTPORT, Conn. -- The Westport-Weston Chamber of Commerce has unveiled a new event for the town, Fitness Week.

Purposefully dovetailed to the end of Restaurant Week, Fitness Week is an opportunity to learn about and set new health and wellness goals and a chance for participating businesses to help people achieve them.

Fitness Week will feature 10 or more companies with an array of services that will suit anyone interested in being fit. Free and discounted classes and memberships, as well as a fair, seminars and public exercise sessions, will be the heart of this new event.

“Last year, I ate at 20 restaurants during Restaurant Week and gained six pounds. It dawned on me that I might need some exercise to offset my indulgence,“ said WWCC Executive Director Matthew Mandell.

“So I came up with the idea of Fitness Week to piggyback one event to the other. It was a simple concept that caught on and I hope it will become an annual event.”

Fitness Week will run from Oct. 19 to Oct. 25. Kicking it off will be a Fitness Fair and Seminar to be held at the Westport Library from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

All the participating businesses will be there to show off their products and special offers for the week. Presentations will be made by Tom George, owner of Westport Physical Therapy, Dr. Deborah Mogelof, physician at Westport Urgent Care and Alexei Bachuretz, director of health and wellness at the YMCA.

A question-and-answer session will follow the presentations.

Sue Gold, director of the Westport Historical Society, will run two free 30-minute qi gong classes Wednesday, Oct. 21, at noon on the lawn of the society's building. Since these classes will be held across the street from Town Hall, the chamber will be specifically inviting town employees to give it a try during lunch.

The Westport Farmers Market, held on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Imperial lot, will be filled by businesses offering demonstrations and free opportunities to try equipment, analyze muscle mass and flexibility, learn ways to stay fit and more.
