Westport is one of four towns chosen to participate in the Solarize Connecticut pilot program, which encourages residents to install solar panels on their homes by making them more affordable. The program provides group pricing discounts on the sale or lease of solar energy installations: The more homeowners in town that participate in the program, the greater the discount.

Since the program was launched in July, 24 Westport homes have signed up. If 40 or more homes participate, Westport will reach the highest possible discount level.

The deadline to apply for the program was Dec. 14. However, the Clean Energy Finance and Investment Authority, which runs the program, extended the deadline due to Hurricane Sandy.

Fairfield, Durham and Portland are also participating in the pilot program. If successful, the program will likely be expanded.

Residents interested in learning more about the program should visit the Solarize Westport website or call Encon Solar, the contractor chosen to install the systems, at 203-375-5228, Ext. 4.
