Connecticut's Unemployment Rate Drops To 5.7%, Lowest In 7 Years

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — The unemployment rate in Connecticut dropped three-tenths of a percentage point to 5.7 percent for June — the lowest jobless rate since July 2008, according to the state Department of Labor.

The report shows that 2,600 private sector jobs were added in the state last month, lowering the unemployment rate from 6 percent in May.

The state’s unemployment rate is lower by eight-tenths of a percentage point from June 2014 when it was at 6.5 percent. The number of Connecticut’s unemployed residents has declined by 13,414 to 108,979 since June 2014.

“Above trend private-sector job growth looks to be continuing, while the jobless rate has recently declined significantly,” said Andy Condon, Director of the Office of Research at the Labor Department. “Connecticut’s unemployment rate, which is below 6 percent for the first time since August 2008, has not been this low since July 2008.”

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy applauded the news

“This is yet another milestone reached – unemployment is down to its lowest point in seven years. This news comes just a month after we created nearly 6,000 jobs, a huge one-month total. We are no doubt making progress, and our strategy is no doubt moving Connecticut forward,” Malloy said.

“These numbers represent another achievement reached, another marker that residents’ lives are improving, and another indicator that our economy continues to head in the right direction as a result of our efforts to create jobs.”
