Bridgeport's SteelPointe Adds T-Mobile To The Lineup Of Stores

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — When Juan Hernandez moved to the East Side of Bridgeport in 1962, friends told him he was making the right move, predicting “big development” would be coming to the area in just a few years.

On April 15, T-Mobile became the fourth business to open at Bridgeport's SteelPointe.

It was with that in mind that the retiree attended Friday’s official grand opening of T-Mobile on East Main Street in the heart of the city's burgeoning SteelPointe development.

“We’ve only been waiting for this for about 55 years,” he said to chuckles from the crowd of city and state dignitaries. “It’s about time.”

T-Mobile is the fourth business to open at SteelPointe, following the much-ballyhooed Bass Pro Shops and the the city’s first Starbucks and Chipotle locations, which flank it.

The next phase will include a movie theater and a hotel on the waterfront.

Long-delayed, the SteelPointe development is seen as key to Bridgeport’s revitalization and what officials hope will be an attractive and bustling deep-water harbor.

“These new coastline improvements will be part of the backbone of one of the most significant public promenades in the region,” Mayor Joe Ganim told a meeting of the Bridgeport Regional Business Council recently.

The new T-Mobile location is expected to become one of the busiest in the region because of its convenient location just off I-95, said District Manager Scott Swallow. The 3,800-square-foot space staged a soft opening about 45 days ago.

“Everything you need to do at T-Mobile, you can do here,” Swallow said.

State Sen. Ed Gomes (D-Bridgeport) said he was pleased to put the state budget battles aside Friday to applaud another business opening in Bridgeport.

“This is going to help push our city forward,” he said.
