Blu Parrot Takes Flight In Westport

WESTPORT, Conn. – Eat, drink and dance: You can do all three under one roof at the Blu Parrot, the only restaurant and live entertainment venue in Westport.

Located at 60 Charles St. across from Luciano Park in the Saugatuck section of town, the Blu Parrot features a permanent stage complete with colored lights, a hardwood dance floor, a spacious dining room and a bar area.

With brightly colored walls and creative menu choices, the environment at the Parrot is exactly as co-owner and longtime Westport resident Adam Lubarsky envisioned — and hoped — it would be: fun.

“We’re eclectic, unpretentious and proud of it,” said Lubarsky, one of the original owners of the former Georgetown Saloon, a live entertainment venue/restaurant in Redding. He is running the Parrot with partners Perry Cantor and chef Stephen Alward, who also co-owned the saloon.

Although some restaurants occasionally offer live music, Lubarsky said the Parrot is different in that it's set up so music “will be an integral part of the experience.”

The Parrot, which will be open Wednesdays through Sundays, will feature live music, twice a day. On Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 5 to 7 p.m., piano tunes will fill the air. On Saturdays and Sundays from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., diners can enjoy musical brunches. Then every night around 9, nightlife at the Parrot will come alive.

“I’m 57 and I love to dance,” said Lubarsky. “There are very few places set up where people past 30 can go have dinner and enjoy live entertainment and dancing. You usually get one or other, but not both.”

When it comes to satisfying your hunger, there are a wide-variety of menu items, including roasted Moroccan chicken wings, eight flavors of gourmet popcorn, seafood or chicken crepes, fried oyster “Po' Boy” sandwiches, shrimp and grits, and more.

The menu is divided into “bits:” small bits being starter plates, cold bits being salads, medium bits being sandwiches and large bits as entrees. There are also naughty bits, or dessert, and kids bits, which is the kids menu.

The main inspiration behind the Blu Parrot came from Lubarsky's late brother and mother. The name pays homage to a stained-glass window of a blue parrot that his brother Drew designed in 1983. The piece is proudly displayed near the entrance of the restaurant.

In honoring his mother, Thelma, who was an artist, Lubarsky dedicated the Parrot to artists. Some of her paintings are among the dozens that decorate the restaurant.
